I just recently bought a 2001 F-150 Supercab with a automatic transmission 4.6 L engine and a 3.08 Rear axel. I have the manual
for the truck and it lists the GCWR as 10,000 lbs but in the same chart lists the maximum trailer weight as 2000 lbs. Is the 2000 lbs rating the maximum tongue rating or is it the maximum I can tow? I appreciate any advice you can give.

 

That would be the total trailer weight including the tongue weight......

Not so sure why it's that low however........ With a GCWR of #10000 that means you would be able to max out your truck at it's GVWR of #6250 and still be able to pull another #3750???

Granted, the 3.08 is not the best thing to be towing with in the first place, so maybe that's why they put the trailer weight so low??

 

3.08 gear and manual trans really hurt the tow rating.

My Canadian owner's manual agrees with yours. i.e. 2000lb towing capacity with 3.08 gears. Quite the jump in capacity by just going to 3.31.

I called Ford's consumer service division and I recieved a letter confirming my F-150's limited to towing 2000 lbs max. Ford said
"Your vehicle was not equipted with a trailer tow package or other necessary required equiptment at the time of manufacture hence we only recomend a maximum towing weight of up to 2000 lbs" Can anyone tell me what the trailer tow package includes?
I'd like to upgrade the truck to be able to tow a trailer and boat weighing about 6000 lbs. Also would changing the gears help? Can this be done without changing the whole rear end of the truck?

 

If you want to tow 6000 pounds, sell your truck and buy a Superduty. It will be chaper than all the parts it would take to do it on your truck and it will do it better in the end anyway.

 

I have the same rig you have. I changed out the rear end to a 3.73, installed a rear sway bar, flipchip, max tranny cooler with a tranny temp gauge, and a class IV hitch. I pull a little over 5000lbs with no trouble. I thought about upgrading the radiator to the larger one but the engine never gets over 210 degrees towing over the passes in the summer so I think it's alright. Total cost of these mods was about $900-$1000. Since its my daily ride I like the 4.6l with the flipchip, quite peppy and economical.

 

You don't neccessarily need a Superduty.
An F150 with the 7700lb package will pull 6000lbs OK.
7700lb package is 5.4L,3.73 gears,trailer towing package,stiffer suspension,245/75/16" tires and I'm not sure what else.
All I know for sure is that my 2001 with the 7700lb package pulls my travel trailer(5000lbs) much better than the 2000 F150 that had the 5.4L,3.55 gears and 17" tires.
There really is no comparison between the two!!!!

 

Thanks I think I'll try this option. I also use my truck for my everyday ride and since I've only owned if for about 3 weeks
trading it in is not real appealing.
