Amsoil Universal ATF here. Been using it in all my trannies since 1992. Cooler tranny temps as confirmed with my temp gauge and slightly crisper shifts. This may be due to less heat.
Any synthetic that's Mercon V rated is going to be better than the petroleum stuff. I don't know about the other synthetics but do not use an additive with the Amsoil. It will compromise the quality of the fluid.
I bought this 97 Expy with the E40D with 83,000 miles or so on it and didn't know the routine maintenance history. The first thing I did was change all of the fluids. I agree. It's definately not too late to change the fluid.
