I'm currently considering buying a Beck 550 replica (like the one in Serotta's link). Beck only turns out turnkey cars now, so they really aren't a kit car anymore. Fit and finish on his cars are top drawer and I was totally impressed by the one I saw some time ago. At any rate, Beck's replica actually ups the ante on the original in both performance and handling and adds some real brakes for those of us interested in stopping occasionally (steering and brakes were weak links in the original 550). A Beck replica can be had for around $25 to $30K (depending on options and current demand), which makes it something I can actually afford to drive on the street regularly (as driving a true original on the street would be way beyond stupid given it's collectability).
If you're really interested in the 550, give Beck a call and at least look at his product. I think you'd be very impressed.

I agree with BigDeal, the Beck is the best of the limited number of 550 Spyder replica manufacturers. Curt Scott, Publisher of Specialty Car (www.kitcar.com ) Magazine is a personal friend of mine. (We served together in Vietnam) He tells me that Beck is a first class operation period.
I've also done a little research, and dug it out for you. Between '54 and '56 there were only about 90 550 Spyders made. Each one slightly different, because they were made by hand. If you can pry one out of an owner's dying hand, it will cost you upward of 1/2 million (500,000 US dollars). I haven't seen any for sale, but I don't look very much because around here, that kind of money is reserved for things we can live in, we go to great lengths to keep our vehicles under the 50K mark.
