if you have to ask, you can't afford it.

PS Gunde's cars is out of business (they were in the Pacific beach area/san diego) The place is full of scooters and electric cars, etc. now. what a bummer, he used to have the coolest cars in there.

Don't know the price of an original, but if you want a reliable Kit, this is the one:

WOW... that is ultra nice.

I think I've seen one of those in my entire life (now two)...

I have no idea what it's worth... I bet it's not cheap.

I did some research on the 550 some time ago, since it's one of my top three favorite cars of all time. A true #'s matching original (either unrestored original or correctly restored) is north of $100K if you can find a collector willing to part with one (in and of itself a daunting task).

I'm currently considering buying a Beck 550 replica (like the one in Serotta's link). Beck only turns out turnkey cars now, so they really aren't a kit car anymore. Fit and finish on his cars are top drawer and I was totally impressed by the one I saw some time ago. At any rate, Beck's replica actually ups the ante on the original in both performance and handling and adds some real brakes for those of us interested in stopping occasionally (steering and brakes were weak links in the original 550). A Beck replica can be had for around $25 to $30K (depending on options and current demand), which makes it something I can actually afford to drive on the street regularly (as driving a true original on the street would be way beyond stupid given it's collectability).

If you're really interested in the 550, give Beck a call and at least look at his product. I think you'd be very impressed.

I agree with BigDeal, the Beck is the best of the limited number of 550 Spyder replica manufacturers. Curt Scott, Publisher of Specialty Car (www.kitcar.com ) Magazine is a personal friend of mine. (We served together in Vietnam) He tells me that Beck is a first class operation period.
I've also done a little research, and dug it out for you. Between '54 and '56 there were only about 90 550 Spyders made. Each one slightly different, because they were made by hand. If you can pry one out of an owner's dying hand, it will cost you upward of 1/2 million (500,000 US dollars). I haven't seen any for sale, but I don't look very much because around here, that kind of money is reserved for things we can live in, we go to great lengths to keep our vehicles under the 50K mark.

All I can say is if it's a real 550 and he's 'cruising the town' in it, he definitely proves the saying: "Inteligence is neither a development of age or wealth".

I agree with BigDeal. If I owned one, it would be garaged, and I'd buy a BECK replica just to tool around town in. The real one would only get out once in a while on sunny days to bask in the yard or maybe thrill the neighbors or local sports car club enthusiasts. Paint the BECK the same color and pretend it's the original at 1/20th of the price.
