For all the hubub and hoopla about the EcoBoost and the Raptor, there are a lot of F-150 drivers with neither. They might not trumpet it from the roof-tops or brag about it, but they drive their trucks with a with quiet confidence (and more gas in the tank when their done.) The fact is that over half the people driving F-150s around drive the V6. It’s the most basic version of the truck you can get, and arguably, the best value per dollar for most people.

According to Truck Trend, that still holds true. For now at least. The V6 is economonical, though, not as much as you might expect. It will gladly carry a 1000 lb payload without much issue. It may be a V6, but Ford has it making 278 lb-ft of torque regardless. You should expect more frequent downshifting with a heavy load.

Ultimately, the question that brand agnostic truck buyers will be asking is “is it better than the Ram?” The 1500 V6 is the more fuel efficient option, there’s no doubt about that. But is it worth it? They make note that there’s a new F-150 around the bend next year. If it’s anything like the Atlas, then I’m going to say yes. Yes it is.
