Driver Puts Ranger in Reverse at 40 MPH! (Video)

Ever Wonder What Happens When You Shift Into Reverse at Speed? This Ranger Owner Actually Tried It!

Admit it, you’ve always secretly wondered what would happen if you shifted your truck into reverse while driving at speed. And like most, you’ve probably imagined some sort of explosion, followed by parts and fluids spraying all over the road. But nobody’s really dumb enough to actually try it, right? We mean, other than wrecking your transmission, there’s a possibility that you’d wreck your truck as well.

But the Internet, as always, never fails to answer our burning questions. And there’s at least one guy out there willing to sacrifice his truck — plus life and limb — to answer this particular question. Our “hero” hops behind the wheel of an unsuspecting Ford Ranger to find out.

After accelerating to 40 miles per hour, said driver shifts into reverse on a thankfully-empty road. But the results are a little disappointing to those of us who expected some fast and/or furious special effects. The poor Ranger lets out some horrific noises that sound like a transmission screaming for mercy. Then the drivetrain does its job as the rear tires rapidly spin backwards.

An impressive reverse burnout ensues until the truck actually starts moving backward. For good measure, the driver then throws it back into drive and does a proper burnout. No explosions, no wrecks, and a fairly melodramatic result.

So, once again, we can put yet another burning question to rest courtesy of the Internet. And for what it’s worth, you probably can’t replicate this in a newer Ford truck. That’s because engineers designed a feature called “reverse inhibit” that causes the transmission to ignore your unadvised shift into reverse at speed. Now, if you still feel the need to do so after watching this video, grab yourself an older truck. Preferably a Chevy or Dodge, of course.
